Types of Water Damage: Understanding the Differences

Introduction

Water damage can wreak havoc in our homes, and understanding its different types is very important for effective remediation.  We will explore three main categories of water damage: clean water, gray water, and black water and jump into the severity of each type.

Water-Damage

Clean Water Damage

Clean water damage, also known as Category 1 water damage, is the least severe. This type of damage results from clean water sources, such as burst pipes or overflowing sinks. While it may seem harmless, it can still cause structural damage and mold growth if not addressed promptly.

Gray Water Damage

Gray water damage, or Category 2 water damage, is a step up in severity. It originates from sources like washing machines or dishwashers and may contain some contaminants. It poses health risks if ingested and should be handled with caution.

Black Water Damage

Black water damage, categorized as Category 3 water damage, is the most severe and dangerous. This water is highly contaminated and may contain bacteria, sewage, or chemicals. It typically results from sewage backups or flooding. Handling black water damage requires professional expertise due to the serious health risks it presents.
