FAQs about Anti-Coronavirus/COVID-19 Cleaning & Disinfection:

Here are some answers and information to the questions BIONIC has received about cleaning and disinfecting services related to the prevention of the spread of COVID-19.

DISCLAIMER: Nothing in the information below should be taken as Medical Advice. Any and all medical related questions, and general health questions, should be directed to appropriate medical providers and doctors.

Do you have a different procedure for cleaning a facility that has been exposed to COVID-19 vs one that just wants to take preventative measures?

Yes, our protocol for cleaning a facility where a COVID-19 infection has been confirmed, or possibly infected, is quite extensive, and involves extensive biohazard cleaning procedures. These procedures are mostly for the protection of our employees performing the services. For example, when working in this situation, BIONIC employees wear full PPE gear, work in teams to monitor each other, and dispose of used cleaning products and agents in specific ways.

What cleaning products are used in cleaning for COVID-19?

The virus is so new, the EPA has not tested and established protocols or inactivation claims. In everyday terms, this means that no one can say with 100% certainty that a particular cleaning product is effective against COVID-19, and anyone who makes such a claim at this point is not using professional discretion or being honest. That could change, but at the present time, there is no test or method to guarantee complete removal, remediation, or killing of the virus by any known chemical.

That being said, the EPA has issued “Guidance to registrants: process for making claims against emerging viral pathogens not on EPA-registered disinfectant labels,” which at this time establishes approved products. An eligible product must meet the criteria in the document in order to make limited claims about disinfectant efficacy. Some of the disinfectants that can make this claim in line with dwell times and product labels are Peridox, Virex Plus, Sanimaster 7, Sanimaster 6, and Decon 30, some Lysol products, and several others.

COVID-19 Prevention Protocol

While we stand ready to assist those affected by the Coronavirus to disinfect their facility and homes, there are many preemptive steps facility managers, property and home owners can take on their own to reduce the risk to employees, members of the public, families and anyone visiting their building or residence.

Here is a list of things that you can start doing right now to make your facility and home safer:

    • Emphasize hand hygiene by all.
    • Instruct everyone to wash hands frequently for 20 seconds using soap and water.
    • If possible, use no-touch dispensers for soap and paper towels.
    • Display hand hygiene posters near hand-washing areas.
    • Keep an adequate supply of cleaning products on hand.
    • Emphasize respiratory etiquette by all employees.
    • Instruct everyone to cover their mouth with a tissue, elbow, or shoulder when coughing or
    • sneezing.
    • Provide tissues and no-touch trash cans.
    • Perform routine cleaning and disinfection focused on high-touch surfaces.
    • At least once per day, clean and disinfect all high-touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches, stair rails, elevator buttons, phones, microwaves, coffee stations, sink handles, water fountains, chair arms, shared workstations or learning materials, and dining tables.
    • Multiple daily cleanings are suggested if at all possible.
    • Provide antiseptic wipes to clean common areas and high touch point areas during the day as they are used.
    • Encourage sick employees to stay home, separating and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
    • Actively encourage employees who have symptoms of acute respiratory illness to stay home.
    • Maintain flexible policies, consistent with public health guidance, that permit employees to stay home.
    • Avoid close contact or observe no contact with people who are sick.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Additionally, any employees who are well but have a family member with COVID-19 should notify their supervisor and other employees in the workplace.

Know the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing

Disease and Viral outbreak is an extremely serious and potentially life threatening situation. BIONIC keeps the health and safety of yourself, your family, and your employees as our top priority. We understand the rapidly evolving situation and circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide pandemic can be unnerving, with new information coming available hourly and daily, thus no chance should be taken; always call in the professionals!

Cleaning: Removes germs, dirt, impurities, and microbials from surfaces and objects. The cleaning is facilitated by using soap (or detergent), water and cleaning to physically remove germs and microbials from surfaces. This process does not necessarily or always kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

Disinfecting: Kills germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

Sanitizing: Lowering the number of germs on surfaces and objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards and requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces and objects to lower the risk of spreading the infection and microbials.

The worldwide pandemic and Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has people scrambling to protect themselves, as well as their homes and businesses from potential infection and contamination. COVID-19 has quickly gained a reputation for being particularly insidious and dangerous. Studies to date suggest the virus that causes COVID-19 can survive on surfaces for up to a week, or longer in some instances. This is why having a trusted, professional, biohazard cleaning and remediation company available to you, is so very important.

Where is COVID-19 cleaning and disinfection most critical? What will need to be cleaned and sanitized?

According to , most person-to-person spread of this superbug occurs via respiratory droplets within a distance of six feet between persons. Little is yet known about the spread of the virus via hard and soft surfaces. However, this pathogen is found to be quite durable with the ability to live for up to nine days outside of a host. Also, recent tests of a cruise ship, and other instances, with a high amount of COVID-19 infections showed the virus was still present on cabin surfaces 17 days after the occupants vacated.

Additionally, to completely clean up the virus the process must include the necessary steps and wait (dwell) times during treatment to ensure the sanitization agent is in direct contact with the coronavirus for the length of time necessary for the agent to be able to eradicate the sturdy virus. So, in order to completely ensure complete microbial cleanup and sanitization, professional deep cleaning is highly advised in areas where an infected person may have been before others re-enter.

In homes and businesses where a person infected with the coronavirus is isolated, the CDC recommends that occupants clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily in household common areas, such as tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, remotes, handles, desks, toilets, sinks and phones. It’s not advised for other occupants to regularly clean areas occupied solely by the infected person due to the possibility of transmission, but a circumstance like this would be a very good example of when microbial cleanup and disinfection by a coronavirus cleanup company like BIONIC Emergency Services becomes valuable since we have the equipment, experience, agents and training to keep ourselves – and you – as safe and healthy as possible.
